چکیده

`̀ In this chapter we argue that many current spatial metaphors, such as `positionality', `locality', `grounding', `displacement', `territory', `nomadism', and so forth require urgent critical scrutiny. The appeal of these spatial metaphors lies precisely in the new meaning they impart, but it is increasingly evident that these metaphors depend overwhelmingly on a very specific and contested conception of space and that they embody often unintended political conception.'' Algebras and grammars for shapes and their boundaries

A special kind of shape algebra is defined for concurrent computations with shapes and their boundaries, together with related shape grammars. Some new types of shape grammar are defined and classified. Table 1. Hierarchy of shape algebras. U00 U01 U02 U03 U11 U12 U13 U22 U23 U33 DOI:10.1068/b2681

DOI:10.1068/b12927 either/or! and

The writings of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, Bauhaus theorists and pioneers of nonrepresentational art, are the framework for a discussion of contemporary issues in computational design. Kandinsky and Klee wrote of the many misguided dualisms in the art theory and pedagogy of their time. They sought to reconcile the seemingly mutually exclusive issues associated with abstraction in art. Som...

DOI:10.1068/p3378 The boogie-woogie illusion

A grid of vertical and horizontal lines, each composed of light and dark squares, is moved rigidly at 458 to the vertical on a gray surround. When the luminance of the background is set midway between the luminances of the light and dark squares, the squares appear to race along the lines even though they are actually `painted' on the lines. The effect arises from the unequal apparent speeds of...
